A Quick Conversation With...

INTERVIEW -A Quick Conversation with: Diana Mcgrane

Welcome the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today I speak to Diana McGrane who recently released her first EP this year! She is currently in the process of getting ready to record her first album so I thought it was the perfect time to have a chat.

What is the hardest lyric you have ever had to write and why?

Writing a lyric usually comes pretty naturally to me. If the mood and the moment are right, the words will come out without conscious effort. Those songs always seem to be the ones I like the most. Finding that right balance isn’t always easy though. Being authentic is a discipline. There is a trust in yourself to accept your inner creativity that must be practiced. And that’s all it is. When I make peace with that, then nothing else matters.

What is the weirdest gift or compliment a fan has given you?

The strangest compliments I’ve ever received are usually when someone compares my music to another artist. Just recently I had a music supervisor tell me that “wondering” reminded her of Roy Orbison’s music. I flipped out because I never imagined that connection, but as I reheard the song, sure enough, I heard the Orbison influences! I was quite flattered by the comparison.

Who is the best band or musician you have had the pleasure to share the stage with?

The best musician I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with is Michael Orland, pianist, arranger, vocal coach, and musical director for 16 years on American Idol. He has played piano for so many of my favourite artists. To grace the stage with him while he played my songs was mind-blowing and an honour.

What one of your songs has been the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

Because of its complex instrumentation, “wondering” is the most challenging to perform. However, this is a great song to get the audience to sing along with during the bridge. It has a lot of angst and can be very relatable!

Dream Collaboration and why ?

I definitely have dreams of people that I would love to collaborate with.  Sometimes I write songs with someone in mind. Morgan Wallace’s, “7 Summers” really touched me. I sat down and wrote a song that I thought he’d like to sing with someone. Something about the love felt in his music inspired me to write a lovely duet. I dig it when I get that feeling. I also have that same admiration of Midland. Hearing them sing harmonies on “wholesome” would rock.
