Today’s Featured Comedian – INTERVIEW – Derek Mitchell

Tell Us about:

Your latest stand up show:

Double Dutch is an hour of standup, characters and stories about navigating cultures – specifically British, Dutch and American ones – as an immigrant and internet person who likes to do accents. Goblin is a comedy theatre show that’s about an emo teenager from the 2000s who grows up to be something horrific: the co-owner of a spin studio.

Your favourite joke you have created:

(in voice of emo teenager) I’m most likely bisexual, I’m just waiting for the test results. Aka to kiss literally anyone and see if something moves.

Your favourite venue to perform at:

The Bill Murray in Islington

The joke that was the longest to write and why?

I think in general the longer it takes me to write a joke the less likely it will ever be funny… but it took me about 5 months to figure out that Double Dutch is funniest when I’m wearing wooden clogs for the entire show.

Comedy hero:

Amy Sedaris

Dream venue to play at:

Hammersmith Apollo

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Point of no return followed by total joy

The hardest joke to perform and why:

At the moment there’s a point in Double Dutch where I joke about how there are probably no right-wing anti-immigrant voters in the audience of my show about being an immigrant and then I pause to see if this is the case, and I genuinely never know what will happen and am always worried someone will say that they in fact hate immigrants.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

My Ffern seasonal scent, a protein bar, water bottle, deodorant, bluetooth noise cancelling headphones, show shoes, wig for content creation on-the-go

Describe your fans in three words:

kind, diverse, community

What we can look forward to from you this year:

A tour, a new show, an Edinburgh run, and some exciting new online stuff!

We’re touring the UK and Ireland with Double Dutch from February 28 through the spring and we’ll be coming to Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Oxford, Sheffield, Manchester, Brighton, Dublin. We’ll also have a run of both Double Dutch and Goblin for a week at Soho Theatre in London from March 10th.
