Improv Corner – How Can Signs Help You…

There has bee a viral trend on social media that the first time I saw someone doing it I saw it’s potential and enjoyment that can be used in the world of improv. It could be used as a game on the stage or even a fun way to warm up in rehearsal.

There are these people that I have seen, mainly in America but I think it has now spread across the pond, where they go into stores like Target and then read the sayings and signs they see on sale in the store. The thing that makes it fun is the way that they use the fonts to push how they actually say the sign and they can use a lot of emotion and drama to connote it. Here is an example:

It is such as simple concept but it works so well and it is hilarious to watch. There are some people that really emphasise the words and create a mini theatrical set in the shops – you really have to take a look at some of them. The ones that work best are the ones where the people exaggerate their words when they really go big with body movements, that is when it works magnificently.

I think these social media video trends are great for improv because they give you practise to create emotion and drama whilst also having a lot of fun.

This could also be a really fun game to play with an audience. Instead of lines from a hat, you could print off loads of different sayings and signs (or even pick up leaflets in the street with lots of unusual fonts) and then put them in a hat and scatter these sayings and signs throughout the scenes. This would work really well and would be a fun game to interact with the audience.
