Every day this month we are taking a look at a variation of couples from different television shows. It is the month of ‘love’ so it in tradition we are looking at the world of relationships. There will be spoilers throughout so be warned!
Day 9 – Steve and Susan, Coupling
This was always compared to be the UK’s version / attempt at a show similar to Friends. When you watch it you can sort of see parts of it. However, there is one thing that makes it completely different to that – the women are completely empowered from the start.
The refreshing thing about Coupling is that Susan has the power from the stat of the relationship and it doesn’t stop throughout. Considering this came out in the nineties / early noughties this was a very unusual thing to see. I only saw Coupling for the first time in it’s entirety in 2013 but when I was at college in Media Studies in 2006 we studied two episodes thoroughly looking at the way things were edited and depicted in sitcoms.
The females in this show know how to be in control and play the guys at their own game when they think they are being sneaky about things in their relationships, throughout the girls manipulate the situations.
The whole show is based around the relationship of Susan and Steve from when they first meet and the developments and rollercoaster journey. This is what makes this show really interesting is that it is the core of the show and they are a very fun couple to watch. There are some really great moments and some really funny episodes where Steve always gets caught out by the very forward and confident Susan.
