Improv

Improv Corner – Improv in the Media –Taskmaster pt. 2

If there is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television, books and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.

I have written about the television show Taskmaster a couple of times on this feature and today we are going to talk about a game that was on the most recent season which is a clear copy or you might say portrayal of an improv game.

In series 18, episode 2, the two teams are asked to do a task where they have to become the best multi-headed creature and do something impressive whilst speaking one word at a time explaining why it is impressive.

This is an improv game that has been a staple of short form for years and you can guarantee if you go to a short form evening this will be one of the games that will eventually come up in some sort of shape or form.

It is a version of the game that I personally think does not reflect improv well and that is not a negative approach like most medias, it is just because the teams do not really commit to it so it doesn’t come across as very good. Saying that, it was was really refreshing to see improv being used in a way to promote it instead of in a negative way and I think it still reflects my analysis of television programmes in the UK still at a point of positive representations of it.
