All this month we are celebrating acts that you need to look out for in 2025. Leading the interviews is Boston based band Nate Perry & Ragged Company. Every Wednesday morning we will be speaking to the band to find out all about them and what they have in store for this year. Today we are going delve into plans for this year and a look back at 2024.
Hello tell us all about yourself?
Nate Perry & Ragged Company: We’re Nate Perry & Ragged Company, a five-piece Americana/alternative rock band from Boston. We’ve been together for a few years, and our focus is on creating honest, relatable music that people can sing along with — and, of course, that brings down the house. We play high-energy Americana rock and roll with stories that come from the heart, and we’ve been steadily growing our reach across the region.
How was 2024 for you?
2024 was our best year yet. We fully committed to investing in ourselves by recording and releasing our debut EP, The Otherside of Everything, which received both digital and FM airplay in Boston and even nationally, along with press coverage both here and abroad. We also got the chance to work with talented industry professionals, building strong relationships that we believe will last for years to come.
On top of that, we really dialed in our sound around the songs Nate writes and polished our live performances, giving us the confidence to play on bigger stages. We started booking festivals, which was a huge milestone and has been a top goal of ours from the beginning. We’ve grown our brand, made great connections in the industry, and have what we think is a solid plan in place to keep that momentum going into next year.
What was the top 3 highlights for you?
Sharing stages with major label artists like KT Tunstall and The 502s was an incredible thrill, and it really set the tone for what we aim to achieve moving forward. Winning a battle of the bands and earning a spot in the Thrive Music Festival was a fun and validating experience, and of course releasing our debut record. What really stands out though is the progress we’ve made behind the scenes. We’ve started building out the Ragged team, collaborating with some incredibly talented and supportive people who bring an objective perspective and push us to be better.
What was the key lesson you learnt from last year?
It might sound corny, but early on, we talked about the band’s dreams, and a quote that’s always stuck with us is, “A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action becomes a reality.” In 2024, we really learned the power of action and teamwork — step by step, we’re starting to turn those goals into realities.
We’ve also learned to never turn down opportunities and treat every gig like it’s the most important one. That, along with being mindful during rehearsal and setting small goals for each session, has really helped us fine-tune the live show and our overall work ethic. In the end of the day, hard work and staying true to ourselves has kept good songs coming naturally.
What are your plans for 2025?
We’re heading back into the studio to work on a new record, and we’ve got our sights set on some big stages later in the year. A full album is in the works, and we’re planning to hit the festival circuit. We can see what our next step is, and we’re eager to get after it as soon as possible.
What other shows are you looking forward to watching this year?
Oasis, obviously! Haha. And Drive-By Truckers, no question — DBT has had a big impact on our sound and style. We’re also excited for Queens of the Stone Age. Hoping Josh Homme comes back strong for the rescheduled 2024 dates after taking some time to rest and recharge.
What styles do you hope to see more of in music this year?
Maybe not a style thing so much as it would be nice to see a shift in the mainstream music scene overall. We’ve seen a lot of solo artists dominate for the last decade, and we hope to see more bands emerging in the coming year to bring a better balance.
There’s a lot of bands on the indie scene and the festival scene crushing it, but seeing the mainstream embrace them again would be a real thrill and it’s time for it. We’re also really interested in how country music has been evolving, especially as it moves away from a pop-centric sound. We’d love to see that trend continue.
What band is your ones to watch in 2025 and why?
Bands like Brother Elsey from Detroit; hearing them really made us feel something. And we’ve got a lot of love for Michigan Rattlers too — their songwriting is incredible.
Do you have any new years resolutions? If so what are they?
Listen to more Led Zeppelin — it never feels like enough! Haha. But we’re focusing on booking more and bigger shows, both for Nate solo and with the full band. And of course, writing more and starting a killer new record that captures the nuance we’ve been adding to our sound. The sophomore release is always a big one, and we’re aiming to make it count.
Are you on social media? If so how can people find out more about your troupe?
We’re on all the platforms, so it’s dealer’s choice. We’re the most active on Instagram though, that’s really home base for what’s going on in our ragged world.
Three words why people should come and see you this year?
Even better live!
