Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
“Yourself” is our new single. It’s about coming to terms with the things you need to let go of – control, your ego, your previous life – in order to fully commit to someone, and, ironically, hold on to them. Of course, what you get back in infinitely more.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
“you have to give yourself to something or it slips out of your hands”
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
“Ruins.” It distills the essence of the record in one song. It’s a song that captured the sound and emotional room-tone that we were going for the most precisely. The rest dive into specific feelings or themes more deeply, but it was like a wide establishing shot for the record. We love a sweeping, cinematic story, too.
Your favourite song to play live:
“Fading” is really fun because it comes off as more immediate and anthemic live; you can feel another side to the song that is a little bit more melancholy on the record.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Abner: Our first single, “Three Thirty“, took ages to write. I had this guitar riff that I just played over, and over whenever I picked up the guitar. Slowly, words would come and I would write them down. I didn’t know if I was writing verses, choruses, bridges, or what. Then one night it kind of all came together. That’s really rare — usually the songs that feel the best come very quickly. This one took its time.
Your most emotional track:
“Stay Alive” from our self-titled might be the most emotional. It’s about grappling with the internal struggles so many of us have—both in ourselves and the people we love.
Dream collaboration:
Gotta be Taylor Swift!
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Excitement. A swell of nerves right up until we step onto the stage, then just catharsis. We love it.
The hardest track to play live:
“Dream” is tricky to play live because the hook is so produced and ethereal — it can be challenging to recreate the atmosphere for a live performance. But, we like to approach the live show as if we were adapting a movie to a play — we’re trying to recreate the feeling, not the exact sonics or arrangement. So it’s a challenge, but it’s fun.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Airpods, notepad, and a neck pillow.
Describe your fans in three words:
Kind, loyal, and patient!
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
So many!! But “The Scientist” by Coldplay came up on shuffle the other day and destroyed me like always.
Also, “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac.
What we can look forward to from your band this year?
We have a new album coming out, so stay tuned!
