Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Julia Raye

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

“Expectations” is the second song I ever wrote! I wrote it during a time when I was feeling torn up about a relationship I was in. I was feeling so much pressure on the relationship both from myself and other people around us. The song is my inner monologue as I try to navigate the situation. I wrote this song 3 years ago and I’ve been waiting for the right time to release it. I’m so excited that “Expectations” is finally out!

Your favourite lyric in this song:

“You say you’re different but I know just what you’re like / keep waiting patient cuz I know you’re just my type.” This line is just soooo me, haha. I’m always so skeptical and guarded when it comes to relationships, even when I’m really into the other person.

Your favourite song that you have created:

My favorite song I’ve made is an unreleased single called “Give You Up.” It’s a song written about a fling I had. The guy I was seeing kept being really sketchy, but for some reason I just wasn’t ready to give up on us. “Give You Up” will be out later this year!

Your favourite song to play live:

My favorite song to sing live is a song called “Daylight.” It’s also an unreleased single of mine. I just finished recording it and I started performing it live recently. It’s such a fun, classic pop song. “Daylight” will also be out very soon!

The song that was the longest to write and why?

My new single, “Expectations,” definitely took me the longest to write. Most songs I can finish up the same day I start writing them, but “Expectations” was so different. I had so much I wanted to say and so many different feelings about the situation. It was hard to find the exact words I wanted to say to accurately express what I was feeling at the time.

Your most emotional track:

My most emotional track is a song called “Wish You Stayed.” It’s a song about my healing journey after a breakup. It’s a song about mourning the loss of a first love, a best friend, the future we had planned together, and all the inside jokes we shared that no-one else will ever understand.

Dream collaboration:

I’m a huge fan of Ariana Grande. It would be a dream come true to collaborate with her. She is such a talented artist and songwriter. Her collaboration with Lady Gaga, “Rain On Me,” is such a great song. I think all of her collaborations showcase both of the artists’ talents so beautifully/ It would be such a dream to collaborate with her.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

It’s such a surge of adrenaline and happiness. When I walk out on stage I get this overwhelming sensation that this is exactly where I’m meant to be. There’s nothing in the world like it!

The hardest track to play live:

“Too Emotional” is my hardest song to perform live, but it’s also one of my favorites! I wrote it specifically to showcase my operatic technique. It definitely shows off my vocal range which makes it more challenging when it comes to getting the mic levels right.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I always take an uncomfortably huge iced coffee, coconut water to help me stay hydrated, an oversized sweatshirt, and my Uggs.

Describe your fans in three words:

My fans are so supportive, fun, and loving!

I’m so thankful to have such an amazing community who are excited to hear my music. It means the world to have people actually want to listen to the little melodies I create. I truly feel blessed to be able to share all of this with them.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

“Oscar Winning Tears” by Raye. It’s one of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard. It’s so creative, dynamic, and real. It showcases her range beautifully. The performance she did with a full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall was unbelievable!

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

I’ll be releasing a ton of new music this year. I’m so excited to share the new songs with everyone!
