Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I’m Sam Cochrane, the Artistic Director of Gigglemug Theatre and writer of A Jaffa Cake Musical.
Tell us all about your show!
A Jaffa Cake Musical is based on the real life 1991 tribunal which saw McVitie’s face off against the Tax Man to prove that a Jaffa Cake is in fact a cake rather than a biscuit.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
I knew I had to get a Jaffa Cake in there somewhere and fortunately for us the name isn’t copyrighted…
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
John Tothill’s stand up last year was my favourite show of the Fringe so cannot wait to see him again, also Flo and Joan, Ania Magliano, Catherine Cohen, Tarot and of course I’ve got to catch OG Gigglemug Rob Madge in their brilliant show My Son’s a Queer. Not to mention our very own Alex Prescot and Katie Pritchard performing in their solo shows too!
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This will be our third Fringe as a company after performing Timpson: The Musical in 2018 and RuneSical in 2022. Chuck yourself into every opportunity that comes your way, enjoy every second ‘cause it’ll be over in a flash.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up. Warm up. Flyer. Perform. Pint. Overpriced mac & cheese from a stall. Go again.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Make the most of those solo walks into town before the brilliant craziness starts again.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
The Africano Wrap Place (that sounds vague but it’s actually the name) or Nile Valley (the equally wonderful African wrap place next door).
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The audiences are up for a good time from the get-go. There’s nowhere else like it.
Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
If you’re in a rush use Citymapper, don’t trust your instincts! However many times you’ve been to the Fringe you always end up down the wrong back alley at some point.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Get yourself a pair of knee braces as there’s a lot of hills. And ideally two new knees.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Just get rid of the first flyer of the day as quick as possible, it all becomes a lot easier after that.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@TheGigglemug on all socials!
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Cake or biscuit?!
