Hello! Tell us about yourself?
My name is Nick Cassenbaum, I am a theatre maker and playwright from London. I’ve previously been up to Edinburgh with my show Bubble Schmeisis, which is about going to a steam baths in East London and finding Jewish identity there. Last year I wrote the UK’s first professional Jewish Pantomime too. I am not performing this year as I now have a three-year-old and I don’t have the stamina…BUT this time we have great actors!
Tell us all about your show!
This is two-hander comedy heist, directed by Emma Jude Harris, romps through 2018 Jewish Essex. Through madcap comedy and biting satire, this explosive tale blows the roof off what it means to be Jewish in the UK. Twins Dan and Lauren meet ex-gangster Malcolm Spivak at their grandfather’s funeral. Malcolm, who’s ‘had enough’, enlists the siblings in a ragtag Yiddishe plot to kidnap then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. REVENGE: After the Levoyah examines antisemitism in the diaspora, the dangers of collective hysteria, and how far one nonagenarian can throw a jar of chraine from a moving vehicle. It included lots and lots of multi-rolling…
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
Levoyah is Yiddish for funeral. All the action takes place after the death of the main characters’ grandad’s funeral…so there you go!
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the Fringe?
Great to see Sh!t Theatre back, obviously. Josh Glanc is very funny and Louise Orwin’s new show looks special.
Have you done the Fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the Fringe.
Eat well, nap and don’t drive yourself too mad. It’s only theatre. Get down to the Turkish baths in Portobello. It’s a great way to sweat off the festival.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Oh, no day is the same…but must include naps.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the Fringe?
Sit in the Summerhall courtyard and chat to people.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Mosque Kitchen. Without a doubt.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media
So you can follow and find out more about the show @thelevoyah and that is the same on insta and twitter. And then I am @nickcassenbaum
And finally, in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Funny Yiddishe Heist (what more do you want?)
