Improv

Improv Corner – Improv in the Media – Extraordinary

If there is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television, books and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.

It is always exciting when improv appears in a show and you are not expecting it and this is exactly what happened when I was watching the new season of Extraordinary. I really enjoyed this show and stumbled across it by accident, it is very random but I instantly liked it. When season 2 appeared om Disney+ it was a wonderful delight and I really enjoyed it and there is a section we have to talk about today.

In Extraordinary in season 2 episode 7 there are a number of scenes where they do improv to get into characters for the show they are preparing. Kash makes his friends warm up by feeling the animal and becoming the animal – where they have to act like an animal they chose to embody. Some do it very well, whilst others don’t really do a lot to portray this (“I’m a F****** worm…”) which is fun because it reminds me of improv warm ups I have been a part of and just how silly they cna be and just how seriously some can take it.

Later on in the show, Kash decides that when he has given out the roles for his play he will make them do improvised scenes as their characters. It is a wonderful mini scene as it shows you the awkwardness some improv scenes can bring and that is why it is so fun!

I find a lot of modern shows use improv as an excuse to be negative or take the mickey out of something but when it is used the correct way it can be a fantastic sense of entertainment. I think Extraordinary and the way they used improv was very clever and a great steering wheel into a segment of the comedy.
