A Quick Conversation With...

INTERVIEW -A Quick Conversation with: Rebecca Lappa

Welcome the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today I speak to the musician Rebecca Lappa. The artist has recently released the single Deep Water and is a deeply personal song about Rebecca’s experience with domestic violence. Today I find out about the musicians thoughts on the music industry.

What is the hardest lyric you have ever had to write and why?

When I was in pre-production with my producer Louise Burns, she had me rewrite my song “Deep Water”. It was difficult because I already had a concept of what I was trying to say, so making the new lyrics better than the original ones was a challenge. It was also difficult to then get the new lyrics to match up with the pre-existing melody.

What is the weirdest gift or compliment a fan has given you?

One time a fan sent me a book that they had written about themselves, and another time I was given a Valentine’s Day present that included chocolate, a stuffed animal, and a small night sky constellation projector.

Who is the best band or musician you have had the pleasure to share the stage with?

Opening for The Crash Test Dummies was an amazing experience because they were very down to earth, and had a fun energy. They didn’t take themselves too seriously which eases the tension of plying a larger venue like Festival Place in Sherwood Park.

What one of your songs has been the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

The song that was the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience was “Lolita”. “Lolita” has a lot of chord changes that I don’t normally play outside of the song, so getting a handle of playing them to a track while singing was an adjustment.

Dream Collaboration and why?

I would love to collaborate with Maisie Peters, Fletcher, or Julia Michaels because they are all very strong melody writers, and have a unique way of saying things.
