Hello! Tell us about your act ?
We turn concerns into cathartic comedy through the greatest medium ever created: Musical mother lovin’ theatre.
We only ask that audience flaws are honest and specific. Then we try to find the resonance in the room: maybe one person hates the feeling of wet velvet, then three more can’t touch sponges and another 5 find plastic unsettling. Now we’re on a group journey to explore and understand a niche quirk that we’re collectively connecting through. Improvising a musical works really well for that because improv and musical theatre are both so beautifully honest whilst being objectively absurd. It’s the right space for self-reflection.
We’ve had issues from being a controlling mother to chewing the tags on new clothes so the door’s wide open. Magically, in an audience of about 60, a man admitted he’d been hiding a stutter from his partner for 5 years and then 6 more hands shot up to say “oh my god, me too!”
How did you come up with the name of your show that you are taking to Liverpool Improv Festival?
I like blunt show titles. We do what we say on the can. Also: always been a sucker for the “Something: The Musical” trope. (Do yourself a favour and watch “Rocky the Musical,” which most successfully ran in Berlin under “Rocky Das Musical.”)
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
Darkly hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt. Musically: Emma’s background is as a classically trained opera soprano, Patrick is an incredible, largely self-taught pianist with a lot of jazz influence, and I started out in rap so we’re pulling in styles from Broadway to Oscar Peterson and MF Doom.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the festival?
“Like Father. Improvised Drag King Musical about Manhood” already made me very happy with every line of its description.
What is the best thing about performing at the Liverpool Improv festival?
I really appreciate the way Liverpool Improv Festival treats us as performers. That runs from the marketing support and clear organisation to paying a fair rate.
What are your three favourite things about Liverpool?
It’s population of 486,100 as of the 2021 census.
The sublime placement at 53.4094°N 2.9785°W.
And who could forget how Liverpool was established as a borough in 1207 in the county of Lancashire and became a significant town in the late seventeenth century?
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Kenjiro Tsuda. He will also be my answer to most questions involving the word “dream.”
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@yourflawsshow for the show
@leeapsey for me
@asimilarriver for a bit of an umbrella over several projects.
And Finally finish this sentence –
‘you should see our show at Liverpool Improv Festival because…. You deserve it.
