Music Memories – This Week – Red Dwarf

The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone. That is what this new article is all about. Each fortnight, we will take a look at a different song and I will take you as a trip down memory lane as to what it means to me. Welcome to Music Memories.

Track: Red Dwarf Theme Tune
Artist: Howard Goodall feat Jenna Russell
Original Release Date: 1988

It is so bizarre that a television theme tune can bring back so many memories but Red Dwarf is one of those songs that has so many memories attached to it. Whenever I hear that theme tune, it will take me back to my aunts room when I was a kid and being allowed to naughtily stay up late and watch the television show.

I think this is one of my favourite theme tunes from a television show as it is dramatic, uplifting and just amazing. It is bizarre because I would not put the show in my top 10, I loved it as a kid but nowadays I would have to be int he mood to watch it. Even if I do love Rimmer and Cat.

I strongly relate this theme tune to being a kid, I grew up in the nineties and was introduced to this show from a very early age – anything on after 9pm was always naughty to stay up late for but this was one of those shows I was allowed to watch – others included Friends and Bottom (!) stick in my mind but I am sure there was a lot more.

It is nice when a song brings back really vivid memories, I can also remember the smell as well – you know how certain memories have a smell attached, nothing bad but just brings back a lot of memories. It is a great song.

Facts About Red Dwarf

  • The Red Dwarf theme appears during the closing of every episode of Red Dwarf, unlike the opening theme which changed from Series III onward
  • The lyrics are reminiscent of Dave Lister’s plan to go to Fiji, which has been ruined by being flung three million years into Deep Space.
