Welcome to the feature which we are going to feature ever so often as part of Improv Corner. Ever so often. we are going to talk to improv acts about some of their favourite things about the comedy form. Today we speak to Annabella from the show Unbridled. The show is an improvised comedy set in the world of Jilly Cooper. Think horses, stables and sex. Think jodhpurs, horses and long-lost twins. Where village fete meets hunt ball; think lords, ladies, butlers and stable lads. And even more horses. And sex.
Tomorrow, the 21st November, they have a show at 8pm at the Albany in Great Portland Street. You can find out more about it here and purchase tickets by clicking here. Today we find out all about Annabella’s favourite things about improv.
What is your Favourite:
Improv style:
long form – really lets a story come to life
Short form game:
More bolly! (a derivation of ‘zip-zap-bong’ but set in the world of Jilly Cooper)
Improv act:
OneHelluvaTwist – amazing Dickensian improv act supporting us on 21st Nov, closely followed by Brother’s Grin
Film or television show:
‘What we did on our holiday’ – because it’s heavily improvised.
Venue to perform at:
The Albany on Great Portland St has a great new downstairs stage – really good soundproofing even when there’s a million people in the bar upstairs. And the triangular stage makes for fun shows!
Way to wind down:
Chatting with friends in the bar after shows
Way to warm up:
Pass the clap, and then some characters work taught to us by the amazing Heather Urquhart.
Suggestion:
Anything weird and wonderful
Show by another improv act
Pirate Prov supported us last week with a fantastic show full of island hopping and misbehaving politicians.
Memory of a show
A really clever call back to a scene about a dead horse (sounds worse than it was!), and some brilliant character work by Kathy Manson, Charlotte Gallagher and Jodyanne Richardson. Kathy singing Britney Spears and dancing with a chair was also a highlight!
Part of rehearsing a show:
The chorus work we did at the beginning and also learning about story spine. Basically our workshops with Heather Urquhart are brilliant, fun and fascinating!
Thing about performing
The unexpected laughs, the character work and the collective power of imagination!
Quote
Heather Urquhart: Tools not rules!
Thing about the improv industry at the moment
That it’s open, supportive, friendly and fun.
Thing about this year so far?
Getting the band (show) back together and performing post covid!
