There is always a story behind a photograph and I thought it would be a fun way to look at the world of travel. So, welcome to the feature that will appear regularly in the travel section.
There is some really interesting architecture across Europe that we don’t see enough from above – so when I get a chance to see it and take a photograph of it.
I have been to Lisbon a couple of times, one time on a cruise and then another in 2011 on girls holiday. Our housemate in one of the years of University was from Portugal and for a week in July in 2001 we went and visited her. For part of that time we went down to Lisbon for a few days.
On one of the days we went up the Santa Justa Lift – a cast iron elevator that was built in 1902. It is now a tourist attraction that you can pay to go up and view the city from above.
The photograph that we are talking about today was taken up the Santa Just Lift. I really like the fact the heat of the weather is evident as the colours of the buildings, trees and floors are vibrant and bright. I have put a lens blur on this photograph because I wanted the focus to be on the square in the centre.
I really like this photograph as it shows the drama of the floor patterns and the way that it emphasises the wonder of the buildings. The lens blur makes the location look like a model village and that is why I like it even more.
It is one of my favourite photos of Portugal and always smile when I see it.
