Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Rowan Flack

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

It was inspired by the flaws that I’ve noticed myself during relationships. Communicating can be difficult! I’m always learning that and how it can be improved. The main themes of the song touch on self-awareness and love of language barriers. I ironically speak about star signs and how certain horoscopes are meant to act in specific ways.  I always get told I’m such a Gemini! (I also am one).

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

The first music I released officially on Spotify was an album! I wasn’t thinking in a single mindset at all. It was a big body of work I’d created and it made sense to release it altogether as a big EP/Mini Album. It’s called ‘New Light Dwelling’ and was birthed out of collaborations I’d formed whilst living in Norway, studying jazz and Scandinavian folk music.

Your favorite song that you have created that is an album track:

My favourite is called Folk Song. I get lost in the melody whilst singing it live and that’s great.

Your favourite song to play live:

Currently, It is ‘I Wish You Love’ by Nancy Wilson or an unreleased track of mine called Let It All Go.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

The song which has taken the longest is maybe the title track of my upcoming EP. We tried so much stuff out in terms of production, I think it took two years in the end!

Although, when I’m sitting at the piano writing, that part generally doesn’t take me long at all. It sounds obnoxious but the music really does flow out of me. An idea generally comes along. That might take months and months, but when it does, the song is written fairly quickly. It is the production and creation of the parts and materials which takes the longest.

Your most emotional track:

The Calling came out in April 2022.

The best lyric you have ever written:

I still love the lyrics on one of the first tracks I put out – just on Soundcloud in 2016 or something. The song is called ‘Always Tripping Me Up’ and the lyric is ‘A stupid little spirit and a shot or two, ‘cause I shot you and you shot me two’. It always had a nice ring to it!

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Super exciting especially if it’s new material, but I do get nervous. You want to showcase your music in the best way.

The hardest track to play live:

Sun Song which is off my upcoming EP – I don’t know why I had to write a song where there is nowhere possible to take a breath in the chorus!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Hopefully, touring is something that will happen in the next couple of years. I’d say headphones, my sleep mask, a notebook/diary and a nice pen.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

No Room For Doubt – Lianne La Havas, Willy Nelson

What we can look forward to from you this year:

My debut EP! Out in autumn
