Hello! Tell us about MUST BE THIS GAY TO RIDE?
This is a show about a woman figuring out if she is queer enough to call herself queer. Throughout this discussion she hits a few road bumps bringing her into the doctor’s office, and a one-night decision threatens to crumble everything she’s been working towards. Based on the writer’s own life, even though it sounds intense, you’re definitely going to laugh.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Camden fringe?
You know when you’re at a theme park with your family and you’re the only one that can’t go on a ride because you’re not tall enough? That feeling of not being enough of something, and it being out of your control is at the centre of our show. A measuring tape doesn’t exist for our feelings, so how can we tell when we’ve hit the mark?
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
It’s a comedy theatre show, blending my stand-up persona with a real-life story from my past.
What will your set be about?
Kissing women.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Women.
Have you done the fringe before? What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?
I’ve done the Fringe in Montreal, Toronto, and a 1.5-week run at Edinburgh last year.
My favourite shows are the ones from smaller comedians who are really giving it on stage. There’s nothing like watching someone have a good time.
What advice would you give to others who want to perform at Camden Fringe next year?
Talk to me when I’m done performing for more specific advice, but otherwise – never give up, never change, don’t look anyone in the eyes, cut up your credit cards, buy a goat.
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
This is the first year I’m doing the Camden Fringe so I have yet to find out! I have a feeling it’s going to be the raw, sexual energy of the performers.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Steal.
What are your three favourite things about Camden?
The food, the bookshops, and the feeling that I’m better than the rest of the world just by my geographical placement.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
I told a friend that joke about my boobs and he said my boobs weren’t even that big – which is fine, I just thought I’d get more support from my own dad.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Sandra Bullock. I think we forget that Miss Congeniality was generation-forming and she has an on-screen magnetism that today’s influencers can’t even touch. If physics weren’t in play, then the rat from Ratatouille, his plus one the brother rat because even if he didn’t like it he’d write me a great review.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Samson, because I think the pigeon is strong and has hair so luscious that you will think about the hair days later, if not weeks.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@katethehammer on everything! Follow me, I will post 5 times in one week then o radio silent for 2 months, it’s a constant source of stress.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
-I’m likeable, right?
