Welcome to the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today we speak to the band Vulgarithm whose music you can check out by clicking here. Today we ask some tough questions.
Hardest lyric you ever had to write?
Most of my song ideas come from inspiration within myself or the outside world, and can come fairly naturally. However when I push myself to write in a particular way, especially if it is closer to a rap style. I would say “Betrayal” was hardest as the vocal delivery and rhythm had to be spot on for recording.
“…unlike my other songs which is performed on guitar, this is performed on keys/piano, and it was a good decade since I performed in front of that size of audience on keys…”
Weirdest gift or compliment from a fan?
I’ve not had too many weird ones, although I think the most touching is when either a band enjoy you so much they ask to collaborate, shout out to the band Negatory Effect. I think the best I’ve had is when one fan decided to make his own Vulgarithm mask and dance. I really appreciated the effort.
Best band to share a stage with?
Not a band per se, but I supported The Orb in Peterborough towards the end of 2022, and they are incredible at what they do. Could dance along to their set for hours and hours. As for an actual band…? Hmmmm…….. I’ve played with some great bands since starting it’s very hard to single one out, but back in 2022 I took part in Cambridge band competition and the camaraderie amongst the finalists was a great experience, so I’ll throw in Prima Volta, LOAE and James White and the wildfires in that answer.
Hardest song to rehearse and perform live?
That’s an easy one. I have an instrumental track called “Go to Sleep” which i put into my set supporting The Orb (see previous question), but unlike my other songs which is performed on guitar, this is performed on keys/piano, and it was a good decade since I performed in front of that size of audience on keys, and probably my first at the time as a solo artist. I haven’t played it since, but that’s only because I need the right audience for it.
“…I think the most touching is when either a band enjoy you so much they ask to collaborate…”
Dream collaboration and why?
I always give the same answer. Trent Reznor (NIN) and Maynard James Keenan (Tool/APC/Puscifer) both can picture things most mortals can only dream of, let alone musicians.
