Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I am a 25-year-old, Australian/Kiwi standup comedian, currently living in Melbourne. I developed a significant cross-stitch habit during the pandemic, so I’m incredibly pleased to be performing in festivals again otherwise I’d just at be at home waiting for carpal tunnel syndrome to strike me down.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
My dad actually came up with the show title, when I was about 19 and had been doing standup for about eight months. He believes in me too much! I think it comes from him combining a scene from an old spy movie with a dream he had or a harrowing story someone told him in the army. I just wrote it down on my list of potential show names and when I started writing this show and so much of it was about trying to fit in – it was a perfect title. My dad is very chuffed.
Tell us all about your show!
It’s a debut hour of stand-up comedy about all the things I did to try and make friends before I was diagnosed with autism in my early twenties, being the child of three generations of military veterans and the impossible nature of blending in when you just keep fucking up. Directed by Laura Davis, twice nominated for Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Amelia Bayler, Chloe Petts, Shelf, Chris Thorburn, Crybabies, Luka Muller, Hannah Camilleri, Lara Ricote, Olga Koch, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd, and literally hundreds of others, I’m always such a spoilt comedy nerd in August, can’t wait for my favourite show to be from someone I’ve never heard of before.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This is my first time performing at the fringe, I’ve visited twice before though and my main advice (that’s mostly aimed at my own hypermobile joints) is to not get so distracted by looking up at lovely buildings and whatnot that you twist your ankle on a cobblestone. I also once fell down Arthur’s Seat and bled all over some lovely tourists, so if you can avoid that I would.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up, panic, forget to eat, remember to eat, do my show, do whatever gigs I have after my show, see a bunch of other shows, feel either great about my show or like it’s trash (depending on the quality of the shows I saw), attempt to socialise, panic, sleep. Repeat.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
See as many shows as you can, be accidentally consumed by at least one walking tour so that you have a fun fact to spout for the rest of the month, try to avoid anybody dragging you up a mountain, and remove yourself from the presence of anyone who makes a joke that was hack in the eighties, like “there are no vegetables in Scotland” – please look in the supermarkets or shut up, I beg of you.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Portable charger, chapstick, high self-esteem
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
I find it most interesting to just continue a conversation with myself that a potential flyer taker can either join in with or ignore (which they mostly do, because I am a woman talking to herself on the street while holding photos of herself)
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
One who laughs at all the punchlines and doesn’t yell out? I’m not that picky, I started comedy in Queensland which is the Wild West of Australia, so I’m stoked with polite listening and no threats.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@gracejarvisohno on twitter, instagram and tiktok
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Hilarious, smart, odd
