Welcome To Taste of States a place where we celebrate the weird and wonderful food of the United States of America. This can be everything from the snacks that are available for a limited time to the foods that are classic traditions at events such as Christmas and Thanksgiving! Each week we will explore the facts and the history surrounding a different food.

LIME CHEESE SALAD
Today we are entering the retro recipes of america to bring you something that I think you would never believe would of been a recipe but it actually was. Last week we look at what modern concoctions have been created from Jell-O in recent years (that even eon an award!) Well now we are going back to a time when recipes were created to try and persuade people to eat it in a new and weird way.
Back in the fifties, apparently there was a fad in recipe books to try and persuade people to use sweet products in a savory recipe. This was one that reading it now, I cannot imagine it being that popular. It consisted of lime Jell-O mixed with vinegar, onion, cottage cheese and mayonnaise. That is not all though – that was just the jelly part, to top off the meal in it’s entirety, it was finished by filling the middle of the jelly ring with a seafood salad.
Hold your horses, I know that sounds like actual seafood but appparently that is what they called the mix even though it didn’t contain any fish. Instead the mix was a combination of various cheeses that were available at the time – this could be anything from cottage cream to American.
