HOOPLA MARATHON – INTERVIEWS – Acts you MUST see! Part 2

This week, The Miller Pub is holding one the biggest Improv events of the season  – The Hoopla Marathon. A 50 hour event of non stop improv with over 200 acts performing in the same room over the whole weekend – it’s going to be an event that you will not want to miss out on!

The event is going to play host to some of the biggest names in Improv, as well as troupes, jams and so much more! The event is a charity event to raise awareness of Team Margot, an organisation that campaigns for people to register as potential bone marrow / stem cell donors and all profits from the event will go to the charity.

So because there are so many acts performing, we have interviewed a bunch of acts about their shows so you know what ones you can go and see! We have interviewed a bunch of acts performing across the whole event at lots of time slots so you can have a varied choice as to what to see!

Have a look below at some of the other acts we have interviewed about their spots!

Vladi (Bloody London)

img_8162What time is your slot?
Saturday 21 October 10.25am

Tell us a little about your style of improv?
Conversational, very much character based, observational humour, interacts with audience, improvised

What will your set be about?
How shit it is being a vampire in London, especially when it comes to finding a nice person for dates etc.

What other acts are you looking forward to?
All of them! I’m hoping to catch a few of the acts before me though while eating breakfast pastries under my vampire cloak. He can’t function without carbs.

In three words why should people come and watch you at the marathon?
Dating. Sucks. Donkeys.

We Are Not A Cult

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 21.20.20

What time is your slot?
We are on at 12.45pm. So we have that prime lunch time slot. I’m sure you have heard the old saying “all the best improv happens at lunch time”. You might also catch some of us jamming it up here and there.

Tell us a little about your style of improv?
I would describe our style as creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and altogether ooky. As a group that is definitely not a cult, we sometimes veer into absurd and dark territory but sometimes we will just talk about penguins for 20 minutes, that’s kinda just how improv goes.

What will your set be about?
Our show will be an improvised funeral. We are very excited about it. I don’t think anyone’s been this excited for a funeral since Anne Darwin. Remember her? She faked her husband’s death for the money? Said he fell off his canoe. That was crazy

What other acts are you looking forward to?
Oh man like so many. I guess if I had to pick one I would pick Music box because Andrew Gentilli from that group taught a lot of us. Oh or improvised Rick and Morty. Is it too late to change my answer?

In three words why should people come and watch you at the marathon
Cult funeral extravaganza.

What is your twitter handle so people can find out more ?
You can find us at @NotACultImprov but to my great shame we have not tweeted yet. Perhaps this will be the kick in the pants we need!

20% Less

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 21.24.36
What time is your slot?
We’re running 2 bit shows at the wee hours of Friday – 1.30 AM and 2.40 AM, both of them are 10 minutes slots.
Tell us a little about your style of improv?
As a team we would slot ourselves under the non narrative long form. Bit shows are a different concept altogether and strictly fun.

What will your set be about?
Whose Wine Is It Anyway and Judge Doody are concepts thought up by Keith Malda and both play around with either concepts of longform improv or the concept of TV shows. They’re both just silly and hopefully will be good fun for everyone making it through the night at Hoopla at The Miller.

What other acts are you looking forward to?
We’re looking forward to see all the bit shows and all the silly ideas that people came up with.

In three words why should people come and watch you at the marathon?
Hilariously, silly fun!

Pie-Day Night

Screen Shot 2017-10-12 at 21.36.44What time is your slot?
12:30am on Friday night (hence Pie-Day Night!)

Tell us a little about your style of improv?
Well, that’s a good question… we’re might be doing some fairly grounded improv at first, but I guarantee you that someone WILL be getting a custard pie to the face. That’s the whole concept. So there’s a fairly short-form-y element to our set, but that may well be off set by some serious improv for all we know. I think it depends on how the room feels at midnight!

What will your set be about?
We are going to be performing a fairly down to earth improv scene, but with a certain set of ground rules. Basically, anyone who breaks those rules gets a pie in the face.

What other acts are you looking forward to?
There are soooooo many awesome improv acts performing that you’d be buzzed to see at any occasion, but I think I’m really looking forward to seeing the stuff that’s unique to the marathon. The sleep-deprived Jams, the one-offs and the silly formats that you wouldn’t normally dare to do! That’s kind of what Pie-Day Night is all about. Special mention to Story Kitchen’s Mega Maestro, as Pie-Day feels very much like a Story Kitchen handle for Maestro or Theatre Sports.

In three words why should people come and watch you at the marathon?
PIE IN FACE
