In the Games Corner – Scribblenauts, Nintendo Ds

When I was a kid, there was a television show called Zzapp! It was amazing – all the comic strips came to life and had different stories or activities in real time. I am probably not explaining it very well but it fascinated me. One particular character that amazed me was the artist. I can’t remember his name but I do remember that everything that he drew came to life – it amazed me. When I was introduced to this game, it automatically reminded me of that artist.

Scibblenauts is a puzzle game that was published on the Ninetendo DS in 2009. It was developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Interactive Entertainment. In each level you are welcomed by a number of puzzles that can only be solved by having certain objects – to do this you write which object you want in a box and it will usually appear (there were a few times I used to play it and when I wrote certain objects they never used to appear but a lot of the time they did). The hero in the game is called Maxwell and thought each platform he needs to collect objects called ‘starites’ to complete each level.

The game uses the touchscreen a lot to interact with the game – this allows you also to interact with the objects you pull into the game such as riding a horse or shooting a weapon at an object.

The game has 220 levels that are played over 10 different themed areas, Each area is given a difficulty rating out of 4 to how hard they are. There is also two types of levels throughout the game – puzzle and action levels.

Scribblenauts is the first portable game in history to win ‘Best of Show’ awards for E3 from any major gaming media outlet. It isn’t hard to see why – once you start to play this game it is highly addictive and hard to put down.
